Case Study: Custom Quilt Embroidery for Stephanie M
Original Artwork

Digitized Result

Project Overview
Stephanie M approached us with a specific requirement: digitizing a design for a 10×10 inch quilt piece. Quilting projects present unique challenges, primarily because the fabric is often layered with batting, which can cause shifting if the embroidery pathing is not calculated correctly. Our goal was to create a clean, crisp result that would look professional on cotton fabric without causing the material to pucker or distort.
The Digitization Process
When we received the artwork, the first step was to analyze the line work. Because this was intended for a quilt, we had to ensure the stitch count was sufficient to hold detail but not so heavy that it would make the fabric stiff. We mapped out the pathing to minimize start and stop points, which is crucial for preventing thread breaks on quilt blocks. With 24,461 stitches, the challenge was to maintain clarity in the fine details while keeping the overall design flat and comfortable to the touch.
We chose specific density settings that complement 100% cotton. Cotton is a great surface, but it can be unforgiving if the digitizing is too dense. We adjusted the pull compensation to account for the way cotton fibers react to needle penetration. By carefully planning the sequence, we ensured the design filled the 10×10 inch space balanced and accurately.
Results
The final file was delivered to Stephanie M ready for production. By focusing on efficient pathing and appropriate stitch density, we provided a design that runs smoothly on domestic and commercial machines. The client was able to stitch the design onto her quilt blocks with no fabric shifting or registration issues.
