Screen printing requires highly defined, crisp lines to create the stencils and screens used in the production process. Any fuzziness or anti-aliasing in the source file would result in bleeding ink and a messy final print on the fabric.
Furthermore, the design featured multiple overlapping colors that needed to be separated into distinct spot colors. Without proper color separation, the screen printer would have to manually guess the color boundaries, leading to registration errors and increased production costs.
The client needed a fast turnaround to meet their printing schedule. They required a master vector file that could be scaled infinitely without losing quality, along with pre-separated color layers tailored specifically for screen printing.
Vectorization & Color-Separation Process
Once the primary vector geometry was established, we focused on node optimization. Minimizing the number of anchor points keeps the file size lightweight and ensures smooth curves when the screen printing film is output. We paid close attention to the fine details of the artwork to preserve the original design’s character.
Next, we performed the spot-color separation. We analyzed the artwork’s color palette, grouping elements into specific Pantone-matched spot colors. We set up registration marks and organized the file into labeled layers for each individual color screen, making it incredibly easy for the printer to output the separation films.
